Did you know that Hashimoto’s Disease, or Hypothyroidism, affects approximately 11% of the population of the United States – that’s a whopping 34 million people! And the majority of these people are female.
Sadly, many practitioners don’t consider hypothyroidism to be an autoimmune disease, which is strange because 90% of hypothyroid cases are autoimmune!
Having thyroid antibodies present in blood work is conclusive evidence for Hashimoto’s Disease. These antibodies slowly, but continually, destroy the thyroid gland, ultimately causing thyroid failure. Patients with Hashimoto’s are typically offered thyroid hormone replacement therapy, or glandular and iodine support, but unfortunately these treatments often add fuel to the fire.
The Main Causes of Hashimoto’s Disease
All autoimmune conditions, including Hashimoto’s Disease, occur when there are three criteria present in the body. These conditions include;
- Genetic Susceptibility
- Leaky Gut
- A Trigger.
The Triggers
We now know of several triggers that exacerbate hypothyroidism and autoimmune conditions, and these include;
- Gluten aversion;
- Vitamin D Polymorphism – meaning our body’s inability to make use of natural Vitamin D;
- Heavy Metal Toxicity;
- Excess of Iodine;
- Surges in Estrogen;
- Pregnancy: particular postpartum changes;
- Insulin surges; and
- Gastrointestinal infections.
It appears that the critical, and most common, trigger is gluten intolerance (not only celiac disease) which about 80% of Americans have a genetic predisposition to.
